The Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) remains the only distribution utility in the country to fully comply with the Electrical Engineering Law.

Meralco was awarded anew by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) with a certificate of compliance to Republic Act 7920 or the “New Electrical Engineering Law.”

The recognition assures Meralco’s 7.6 million customers that the power distributor’s facilities and buildings are fully maintained by an adequate number of highly qualified professional and registered electrical engineers, and registered master electricians for safe operations.

“Meralco’s commitment to safety as an integral part of its operations is highlighted with its full compliance to the Electrical Engineering Law. We hope that this serves as an inspiration to other distribution utilities to follow suit,” PRC chairman for professional regulatory board of electrical engineering Francis Mapile said.

The law aims to comprehensively regulate the practice, licensing, and registration of licensed electrical practitioners in the country.

Meralco in 2019 became the first distribution utility in the country to conform with the law. It remains as the sole fully compliant energy distributor.

Antonio Abuel Jr., vice president and head of Meralco facilities, safety, and security management, said the recognition empowers the distribution utility to continue delivering on its promise of reliable and efficient electric service.

“Meralco’s vision is to be a world-class company and a service provider of choice. To deliver this promise of safe, reliable, adequate, and efficient electric service, we rely on our 5,800 strong, competent, qualified, and committed workforce wherein 30 percent are licensed electrical practitioners,” Abuel said.

Meralco has committed to support the PRC’s compliance advocacy and help promote and influence compliance of its other stakeholders, namely its subsidiaries, service contractors, suppliers and customers, in collaboration with the Institute of Integrated Electrical Engineers of the Philippines Inc.
