Globe accelerates GoWiFi expansion

- By RICHMOND MERCURIO

Globe Telecom Inc. continues to provide more school communities quality access to the internet through GoWiFi, as it sealed a partnership with the Philippine Normal University (PNU) and the Philippine Women’s University (PWU).

GoWiFi, the country’s largest WiFi service, will be available within the campuses within the year.

By having GoWiFi available inside these educational institutions, Globe said students and teachers alike would be assured of free, high-quality data connectivity that they could access any time of the day.

“We are very excited to be partnering with PNU and PWU – two of the biggest universities in Manila in our continuous expansion plans,” GoWiFi director of business development and marketing Janis Racpan said.

GoWiFi is the country’s largest WiFi service that aims to provide customers better WiFi experience with speeds of up to 100 Mbps, depending on the location.

As of the first half, GoWiFi was accessible in 2,500 sites nationwide, up by 500 sites from the previous year.

Racpan said Globe intends to double its GoWiFi sites to 5,000 by next year as it continues its expansion plans nationwide, particularly in high-traffic areas like malls, hospitals and school to make high-quality internet connection accessible and affordable to more Filipinos.

“We will be firing up more sites until end of the year, to better address the rising demand of public WiFi connectivity and data access of the younger and mobile market,” Racpan said.

Globe said students are among the heaviest internet users in the country, using it mostly for study and research purposes, surfing the web, using social media, streaming favorite shows or movies, and trying the latest apps.

Last week, Globe and the City of Manila entered into a memorandum of agreement for the Ayala-led telco to provide fast and reliable internet connectivity in key areas with GoWifi.

Under the MOA, Globe is making GoWiFi available at Manila City Hall, Ospital ng Maynila, Tondo Medical Center, Gat Andres Bonifacio Memorial Medical Center, Tondo National High School, Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila and Universidad de Manila.

Globe president and chief executive officer Ernest Cu said GoWiFi is a very important concept for the company as it brings fast and reliable internet connectivity to the public.
