Canon continues Banaue advocacy

-

Officials and employees of Canon Marketing Philippines, Inc. ( CMPI) and members of its Canon Advocacy Team ( A Team) visited Banaue, Mountain Province where they held their second year of Bachang — when Canon not only helped in the restoration of another rice terrace site but also engaged in other environmental, cultural and educational activities.

CMPI president and CEO Alan Chng turned over P80,000 to the local government of Barangay Viewpoint to buy restoration tools for the Viewpoint Terraces and P35,000 to the Mangili-Cuyappi Association, Inc. to restore the native Ifugao huts in Tam-an Village. Canon also donated two TV sets and 2 DVD players, and school supplies such as educational videos, notebooks and crayons to Patilong Elementary School.

“Our donations and volunteer efforts reflect Canon’s continuous commitment to living our corporate philosophy of kyosei – that regardless of race, religion and culture, we are always here to serve for the common good,” said Chng.

Started a year ago, the Bachang Project involves the repair of the Batad Rice Terraces, one of the damaged areas after typhoons struck the Philippines. This Canon advocacy was ignited by Canon Crusader of Light, John Chua together with some other Canon Crusaders of Light, Canon employees and the Canon A Team. The group trekked the northern mountains and initiated manual repairs on the rice terraces after it was placed under the endangered world heritage site list by the United Nations Educational, Scientifi c and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) because of its deteriorating condition caused by soil erosion and typhoons.

Through Canon’s initial efforts, other companies followed suit. Canon was eventually recognized by the Anvil Awards, the premier awards given by the Public Relations Society of the Philippines (PRSP) to programs and advocacies done by companies for the betterment of its consumers and the community.
