JV meets the movie press

- By Ricardo F. Lo

The rest of his family (from his father, former Pres. and Manila Mayorable Joseph “Erap” Estrada; to his mom, former actress and San Juan City Mayor Guia Gomez; and his siblings Sen. Jinggoy Estrada and Jude) are familiar with the licentious movie press but not San Juan City Rep. JV Ejercito who is running for Senator in the 2013 elections.

But the other day, Senatoriable JV gamely fielded questions that only the movie press could pop.

On his rivalry with Jinggoy: “It started when we were kids and they were teasing us kung sino ang mas guapo sa aming dalawa. But we are okay now.”

On who is the true babaero (wom-

anizer) in the family: “Of course, si Daddy” (who concededly is the bestlooking among the three). “It was safer during his time because there was no celfone and no Internet.”

On the Anti-Cybercrime Law: “Minus the controversial provisions, I am for it.”

On political dynasties: “There’s nothing wrong with it. If you grow up in a political family, naturally you aspire to be also a politician in the same way that if you grow up in a family of doctors or lawyers or writers, you tend to take up the same profession. Besides, it’s the people who will eventually make the decision.”

On (if elected) whether he and Jinggoy will agree to disagree or compromise on issues: “He has his own mind and I have my own mind. Pareho kaming independent-minded. We don’t have to agree or disagree all the time.”

One of the Ten Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) in 2007, JV is among those from political “dynasties” running in next year’s elections. His other relatives in the race include his father Erap, who’s running for Mayor of Manila; his mom, San Juan City Mayor Guia, for re-election; Jinggoy’s daughter Janella, for San Juan City Councilor; JV’s cousins Gary Estrada, for re-election as Board Member in Quezon, and Jana Ejercito (Jesse Ejercito’s daughter) for congressman in San Juan City.

Meanwhile, here’s an updated (but still partial) list of showbiz people running in the 2013 race:

Briefly noted

Japanese actor-producer Jacky Woo must love the Philippines so much because he doesn’t just keep on coming back, he has as well produced a movie,

Death March, shot entirely here, with Adolf Alix Jr. as director. Jacky, who also stars in it, has some scenes filmed in Papaya, Nueva Ecija, where he has a school building built for children who can’t attend classes in faraway towns. Jacky also guests regularly in the GMA top-rater gag show Bubble Gang. He’ll be back end of November after attending the Manhattan International Filmfest in which his film Haruo is competing. He also co-produced Ride To Love with Regal Films. Heard that lawyer Joji Alonzo wants Jacky to star in an indie that she’s producing for the 2013 Cinemalaya.

I got this piece of good news from The Korean Herald: Nash Ang, a Filipino exchange student at Korea National University, directed an hour-long documentary titled Live To Dive (Lusong) which depicts the grueling poverty in a small outlying village in Masbate. Lusong drew attention when it was shown at the DMZ Korean International Documentary Film Festival last year and, according to the Korean Herald, it led to his receiving a full scholarship at the Korea National University of Arts, said to be the nation’s most prestigious film school. Lusong was entered in the official selection category of the recently-concluded 13th Pyong Yang (North Korea) International Film Festival.
