STAR bags DOST award

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has conferred the first Dr. Jose L. Guerrero (JLG) Media Institutio­nal Award (print category) on The

Philippine STAR for its valuable contributi­on to the promotion of science and technology in the country.

The DOST said the award recognizes “outstandin­g men and women in media whose reportage heightened the public’s awareness and appreciati­on

of science and technology.”

The Philippine STAR received a bronze sculpture trophy and cash prize during the awarding ceremony held at the Arts in the City in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig Friday night.

The other recipients of the JLG Award (institutio­nal) were Filquest Media Concepts Inc. (loqal.ph) for cyber press and the Philippine Broadcasti­ng Services for radio.

The awardees for the profession­al category were Paul Icamina of (print); Michael Balaguer of for cyber press and Leila Tumanan of for radio.

The DOST also gave special citations to and networks for their extensive coverage of the Fukushima nuclear power plant incident in March last year.

The award was named after the former director of the DOST’S Science and Technology Informatio­n Institute Jose L. Guerrero, “who exemplifie­d the genuine desire to promote science and technology informatio­n through various means.”

Guerrero served as institute director from 1990 to 2004.
