- Iris Hazel Mascardo/BRP

The Cebu City Council has approved a resolution authorizing acting Cebu City Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia to enter into and sign the memorandum of collaboration with Cebu Province and four cities for the conduct of the Palarong Pambansa 2024, for and on behalf of the city government.

This memorandum includes an agreement that the activities relating to the event will be held not only in host Cebu City but also the cities of Mandaue, Lapu-Lapu, Naga, and Carcar. It was approved during the regular session conducted last Wednesday.

The said resolution was sponsored by acting Vice Mayor Donaldo Hontiveros, chairman of the Committee on Sports of the Cebu City Council.

As the hosting of the sporting event nears, the Cebu City government expanded its efforts by collaborating with neighboring cities and some of the towns in Cebu Province.

Hontiveros’ resolution read that the holding of this event in Cebu is a significant avenue for the tri-cities alongside the component cities and municipalities of Cebu Province to showcase their “hospitality, their people, and their remarkable tourist sites to the different delegates from the different regions of the country”.

“The Province of Cebu, who has supervision and control over its component cities, expressed its intention to support the activities of the Palarong Pambansa 2024, in line with its thrust to promote sports tourism within the entire island of Cebu,” an excerpt of the resolution further read.

Aside from Cebu Province, the cities of Mandaue and Lapu-Lapu, have likewise expressed their intention to lend their support and cooperation on “aspects that may require their collaboration”.

To officialize this, a memorandum of collaboration will be made to formally seal the respective commitments. Attached in the council’s agenda is the copy of the said memorandum indicating the representation of Garcia as acting Cebu City mayor, Cebu Province represented by Governor Gwendolyn Garcia, Mandaue City represented by Mayor Jonas Cortes, and Lapu-Lapu City represented by Mayor Junard Chan.

The copy of the memorandum also stated the intent of the agreement such as the contribution in various ways including financial aid, human resources, or security assistance.

It also agreed that the parties will coordinate with each other in all areas and events, especially on activities that will be held in their respective jurisdictions, as well as provide measures to ensure the promotion and enhancement of sports tourism among their constituents.

The Palarong Pambansa, the country’s largest national multi-sporting event, will be held here from July 9 to 16, 2024, with Cebu City as the host city. –
