Motorist dead, another injured in road accident
A motorcycle driver died in a fatal road accident on A. Miñoa Avenue, Barangay Bacayan, Cebu City Monday evening.
Mario Lazarte Genobia, 53, a resident of Sitio Aroma, Barangay Pulangbato, died on the spot after a dump truck lost its brakes and plowed into his motorcycle, dragging and running over him in the process.
Then, the truck also hit and rammed into a van, injuring the 39-yearold driver, Joel Cabreros, a resident of Barangay Cabelen, Liloan town, Cebu.
Based on an investigation, Police Lieutenant Colonel Wilbert Parilla, deputy director for operations of the Cebu City Police Office, said the dump truck driver, Manuel Laguna, 39, a resident of Barangay Tamyao in Compostela town, claimed that the truck suddenly lost its brakes and ended up ramming into a motorcycle in front.
“Ang truck nabanggaan ang motor dayon nalatayan ang driver. Human naigo pud ang usa ka van,” said Parilla, adding that the accident was due to a mechanical problem.
He said Laguna is facing charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and damage to property. The suspect is currently detained in Talamban Police Station.
The incident caused heavy traffic in the area for
over two hours.
This was the second road accident that day.
Early Monday morning, seven persons were also injured when a Toyota Avanza rammed into a concrete wall near Busay Elementary School in Cebu City.
The vehicle was reportedly traveling at a high speed before it lost control at the curved portion of the road.
Witnesses in the area also claimed that the vehicle was traveling at high speed before it lost control in a curved part of the road.
The vehicle was driven by Joshua Padillo, 20. He was with three male and three female passengers who are mostly in their 20s.
According to barangay tanods who first responded to the incident, they appeared to be drunk.
