Team Cebu shines in Skate Philippine­s

The Cebu Figure Skating Team emerged as the most bemedalled entry in the Skate Philippine­s:Summer Championsh­ip 2018 recently at the SM Mall of Asia Skating Rink.

The event is part of the bi-annual series organized by coach from Skate Philippine­s to showcase the techniques and tricks of figure skating students in the country. The competitio­n had visiting coaches from abroad judging the performanc­es alongside Figure Skating Olympian Michael Bautista.

Team Cebu under coach Ireneo Awing raked up the highest points from all competitor­s, with Johannah Go as the higest pointer, Dominique Van Chua as the highest-level skater, and Armielle Cabrera receiving the Ice Princess award.

Alsom France Tadena came out as the most promising skater and Maurellee Paredes as the most artistic.

The Team also participat­ed in different division events:Danica Denise Chua performed as Wonder Woman;Backyard Boys-Dominic Van Chua, Lloyd Vincent Formentera, and Joseph Ryan Abadilla performed trio routines, and 14 skaters formed as Cebu cheerleadi­ng squad for their final piece.

"We created this event in the Philippine to help skater showcase their honed skills on ice. Figure skating is a good sport to venture in for Filipinos as we have the body type and artistic culture to excel in the field," said event director Christian Gabriel Cruz.

Up next for Team Cebu are internatio­nal stints via the Skate Asia in Japan and Thailand.
