Can gov’t agencies prevent runaway prices?

The remains of the late Bishop Msgr. Teofilo Camomot were exhumed the other day so these can be moved to better burial grounds in Domus Teofilos just a few meters from his original gravesite. From Fr. Mhar Balili’s Facebook post, we could see that a short procession was held after which the bishop’s remains were put on public display until yesterday. But for those who saw that his remains were covered in wax because he has already been corrupted, it doesn’t mean to say that his qualities to become a saint diminished. There are many saints in Rome whose bodies have already corrupted. Ask anyone if they have seen the remains of St. Paul or St. Peter.

When I was in Nagasaki last July 2016 prior to my kidney transplant, I visited Nishizaka Hill where on Feb. 5, 1597, 26 Catholics; four Spaniards, one Indian, one Mexican, 17 Japanese laymen, and three Japanese Jesuits were crucified in a cross formation during the era of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Many more Japanese Catholics were martyred in Nishizaka Hill, including our very own San Lorenzo Ruiz. The most famous of these Japanese martyrs is St. Paul Miki and I was privilege to touch his bones in the chapel behind the Jesuit museum. St. Paul Miki was one of the saints I prayed to before my kidney operation.

Meanwhile I understand that Fr. Samson Silloriquez, a postulator from Rome for the cause of Msgr. Camomot’s sainthood, came to Cebu to have his bones cleaned and varnished. After all, it has been 30 years since his death. Other than that, the examination of Msgr. Camomot’s remains was kept in private. But later there was a viewing of his waxed remains, which will be interred in his final gravesite at this time.

So we are now in the next step in the process for the cause of Msgr. Camomot’s sainthood. The Cebu Archdiocese has to make a “position” that will prove Msgr. Camomot’s virtues and sanctity. For us ordinary mortals, it means we should continue praying the Vatican accepts the position and canonizes Msgr. Camomot. This is the best we can do.
