Continuing the work of the observatory's founder, Percival Lowell he'd spent nearly 12 months searching the heavens for proof of the existence of the theoretical body that made Uranus wander in its orbit. Tombaugh was able to announce that the planet was indeed a reality. It was the first new planet discovered for nearly a century, and it was the farthest away from the sun, over three and half thousand million miles. o. It was called Pluto, embodying Lowell's initials and referring to Pluto, the god of the dead and uter darkness!
