Road to success

- By Juliet C. Revita

SUCCESS does not happen overnight. It takes a passion, desire and hard work to achieve your dreams.

This has been proven by Renato B. Roxas Jr. with his dedication for work and his skill and competence, qualities that enable him to deal with multiple projects and be- come a team player.

Roxas was born and raised in Tibungco, Davao City. His mother, Perina B. Roxas is a former Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) in Middle East, while his father, Renato Roxas Sr. is a security guard.

He recalled that an

He recalled that an early age, he had witnessed their hard situation and even made a mental note that he will lift their life out of poverty in the future.

“Life is hard. And as the eldest of three, I have seen it myself how my parents strive to provide our needs,” Roxas said.

As he realized that he could even help his family with odd jobs, what made Roxas differs from his other colleagues was that he knew that education was an important tool to translate his dreams into reality.

According to him, he had various chores to help his family financially. While in college, he applied for several part-time jobs to augment the income of his family and support his studies. A worker at day and a student in the evening, he said it was never easy to balance both. Nonetheless, he continued.

From a hot press and gang rip (GR) operator that produces ply boards, he also used to be a canteen dishwater and service crew in their school and later promoted as a purchaser and assigned in the procurement of products in a cooperative.

Withstanding the odds, Roxas graduated as a scholar of Commission on Higer Education (Ched) at the University of Southeastern Philippines (Usep) with a Bachelor degree in Computer Technology.

In search for a greener pasture, Roxas, after his graduation, landed in Makati Development Corp. (MDC), one of the leading construction companies today and the developer of various state-of-the-art buildings in the country. MDC is also the company behind the towering buildings standing in the heart of Davao City.

He is currently one of the Building Information Modeling (BIM) modeler for Visayas and Mindanao projects. But before he got the promotion, he then became an AutoCAD operator. His line of work provides the most comprehensive and accurate construction documents that meet project specifications feasible in the time allocated.

“Before, I was just looking at those buildings upon passing Bajada while wondering who might be the people behind it and how it is being done considering its complex structure. I even thought that the people must be excellent enough to be qualified, not knowing that soon enough I will be one of them,” Renato said saying that he already had a passion in designs as he used to create miniature houses made out of popsicles during his spare time.

Interestingly, from a mere spectator, he is now part of the Technical Support Division (TSD) working team behind the construction of Abreeza Place Tower 1 and Tower 2, Abreeza Residence and Avida Towers Davao.

Despite the lacking of experience in the field of civil design, Roxas appeared unfazed because he said that his desire is much stronger than the intimidation of his working environment. ‘Keep going on’

According to him, the impressive figures seen in the bank is not the real measurement of someone’s success, but the happiness and satisfaction seen in their eyes while performing their duty.

Roxas said that one thing that led him to his direction is his love for his work and his ability to keep going on regardless the circumstances ahead.

When sought if he ever felt like quitting, Roxas said that his dreams have fueled him to go an extra mile.

“I don’t feel like quitting because I have a goal to be rich, for myself and more importantly for my family,” he said.
