300 to join Gullas Cup

The biggest Jose R. Gullas (JRG) Tennis Cup kicks off tomorrow in two different venues, Citi Green and Alta Vista. The JRG Tennis Cup, now a Group 1 tournament for the first time, is expected to hit a record number of more than 250 tennis players participat­ing.

“It’s the first time that we got a Group 1 rating in our 23 years of the JRG Gullas Cup. We expect a record number of participan­ts,” said event organizer John Pages.

Tournament director Fritz Tabura expects the number of participan­ts to balloon up until the deadline at noon today.

“We expect it to reach 300 participan­ts,” he said.

The JRG Tennis Cup starts tomorrow and will run until June. It could even extend beyond June 5 depending on the duration of the matches.

The 23rd JRG Tennis Cup has nine age groups – 10 Years and Under Unisex, 12 Years and Under Boys, 12 Years and Under Girls, 14 Years and Under Boys, 14 Years and Under Girls, 16 Years and Under Boys, 16 Years and Under Girls, 18 Years and Under Boys, and 18 Years and Under Girls.

There is also a Doubles event for both Boys and Girls in the 18 Years and Under, and the 14 Years and Under age categories.

The premier youth tennis tournament in Cebu is finally becoming a huge national tournament and some of the best youth players from all over the country are expected to participat­e.

“It’s not just Visayas, Cebu or Mindanao, but the whole Philippine­s,” said Pages. /
