Abella retains Awum crown
Lizane Abella bucked a challenging route to win her second straight title in the 2018 All Women’s Ultramarathon (Awum) with a record time at the Cebu Provincial Capitol grounds yesterday.
Abella of Spectrum Runners Club finished the 50-kilometer race in 4 hours, 21 minutes and 4 seconds, shattering the event’s record of 4:30:32 she set last year.
Stephanie Marie Jayson of Paksit-Lasang came second with a time of 4:32:29 followed by Sandra Soliano, who’s also from Spectrum Runners Club, at 4:54:10.
“Sakit ang route (this year) because there are a lot of uphills. But I enjoyed the race despite the challenge,” said the Mingllanilla, Cebu native Abella, who led from the get-go.
This was Abella’s third major title in three months following her triumph in the 2018 Cebu Marathon in January and the 7-Eleven Run Philippines Cebu Leg last February.
Kay Razel Cundagan of Paksit Photos clocked 4:59:56 and Elynn Mira of Spectrum Runners Dumaguete timed 5:00:29 to complete the Top 5 in the ultramarathon exclusive for women.
Spectrum president Gerry Mayo lauded the effort of the female runners for another successful outcome.
“I’m so happy and proud of all their achievements. Five of our runners made it to the Top 10. The ladies are dedicated on helping each other in the training,” said Mayo.
Completing the Top 10 were Ivy Christine Muscosa (5:09:59), Marivic Mari (5:13:31) of Team ADR, Wilma Theresa Lugay (5:14:54) of Oval Runners, Preciosa Russell Sanchez (5:14:58) and Leonora Villamor (5:23:37) of Spectrum Runners.
