Frat groups in Busay agree to remove insignias

-

Officers of two rival fraternities in Barangay Busay, Cebu City have agreed to remove their insignias and logos that were painted on a wall in the village, which is reportedly the cause of conflict between the groups.

Councilor Dave Tumulak, deputy mayor for police matters, together with Busay Barangay Captain Amilo Lopez and Councilor Eliodoro “Yody” Sanchez, met with the leaders of Tau Gamma Phi and Alpha Kappa Rho yesterday afternoon after a shooting incident last Thursday that killed two frat members.

“The conflict really started when one member of the rival fraternity allegedly did something to the logo of the other. That’s why we asked them to remove it,” Tumulak said.

Benedicto Tabarno Jr., 19, and Pierce Ulivas, 15, who allegedly belonged to a fraternity group, were shot dead in Nivel Hills last Thursday evening.

Ybañez said that the two were drinking at 11:30 p.m. when two unidentified assailants on board a motorcycle started shooting at the victims.

A 16-year-old girl was also grazed by a stray bullet.

Ybañez said that Ulivas was an out-of-school teenager while Tabarno often helped his father in a construction site.

Police investigators are tracking down the victims’ companions so they can identify the ones who fought with the victims prior to the incident.

Aside from removing their logos, Tumulak said all members of the two fraternities were also asked to refrain from wearing their group shirts, except during special occasions.

The two groups also agreed to coordinate with the police to give justice to those who died last Thursday.

Tumulak plans to meet with the other chapter leaders in other barangays next week.

Cebu City’s tanods are under oders to enforce a curfew as one way to prevent frats from recruiting children.
