The Southwestern University boys beach volleyball team scored its fourth straight victory in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) Beach Volleyball Competition yesterday at the Fort San Perdo Beach Court, beating the University of San Jose Recoletos, 21-13, 21-9, for their fourth win in the league.

Earlier in the day, they also earned another victory over Don Bosco Technological Center, 21-15, 21-15 to lead the standing, 4-0.

The sun was setting when SWU’s Joshua Cedro was sent into the game after sitting it out in the first set.

Winner’s pose

SWU was leading by a set. Cedro took his spot, struck a pose—as a beauty queen in a pageant would— before hitting a killer to help his partners Christian Rom and Rancel Varga collect their fourth straight victory.

He kept an eagle-eyed focus when the ball was in play but couldn’t help but show off his animated self when he scored a point, to the delight of the crowd.

He made big points and didn’t hold back in celebrating them.

“I am Pia Wurtzbach,” he said after the game. After high-fiving his teammates, he went on to say, “My coach supports me. My teammates, too. We always make fun of each other but in the end, we respect and support each other,” said the 12th grader.

The team looks to continue their dominance in the league.

Having been reprimanded for how he sashays on court, Cedro said he continues to play this way because he is comfortable with it.

“My style is to to play in whatever way I’m comfortable with,” said Cedro, who was named second best outside hitter in the indoor volleyball competition.

Meanwhile, SWU’s men’s counterpart recovered from their loss to defending champion University of the Visayas the other day and beat Cebu Institute of Technology-University, 24-22, 23-21, yesterday.

The team, which is powered by indoor volleyball finals MVP Mark Petencio, Dave Cabaron and Raul Consad, now has a 1-1 record and is locked in a three-way logjam with University of San Jose-Recoletos and University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) at second place.

UV stayed on top with a 2-0 record. CIT-U dropped to 0-2.
