Villanueva eyes KO win in Mexico
Arthur Villanueva knows that winning by decision in Mexico against one of its stars is close to impossible. That’s why he’ll do his best to knock world champion Luis Nery out in their non-title 10-rounder this tomorrow at the Gasmart Stadium in Tijuana, Mexico.
“I believe Nery will try his best to knock me out. I also do my best for a knockout win because it’s very hard to win here by decision,” Villanueva told SunStar Cebu.
Villanueva assured that he’ll be in his best shape this weekend against Nery, the World Boxing Council (WBC) bantamweight champion.
“I don’t feel any pressure. I have adjusted well to the place and with my sleep. I didn’t have any problems cutting down in weight,” said Villanueva.
The 28-year-old Villanueva is dire need of a huge win to boost his confidence after suffering two losses in world title fights. He vied for the International Boxing Federation (IBF) flyweight belt and lost by a technical decision to McJoe Arroyo in 2015.
He fought for the interim WBO bantamweight belt and lost by unanimous decision to Zolani Tete seven months ago.
Nery is fresh from winning the WBC bantamweight belt following a stoppage win over Japanese star Shinsuke Yamanaka in August.
Villanueva is 31-2 with 17 knockouts, while Nery is 24-0 with 18 knockouts. /
