HAWAIIAN FLAVORS, SHAKA STYLE

- HANNAH V. OBAL / Writer

Relatively new to Cebu and bringing with it a food concept that has many clamoring to try the food, Shaka Hawaiian Restaurant at Cebu IT Park is definitely a welcome addition to the Queen City of the South. With a great outdoor ambiance and a design likened to a tree house, there is no reason not to go to Shaka, especially when it comes to the food.

To really get the feel of the place, try Shaka’s Hawaiian inspired dishes to get started on the Shaka journey.

Taro chips

Great as an appetizer, even better paired with beer, Shaka’s taro chips are well-loved and well-known. It’s crisp, light, and has the perfect side dip of chili garlic mayo that gives the hint of sweetness in between the salty and spicy taste.

Tuna poki

Think of it as a variant of the local kinilaw, minus the acidity as this dish simply has no acidity to it. The tuna is fresh and the tomatoes and onions create a burst of flavors in the mouth that can have one ooh-ing and ahhing in delight. They also have the mixed seafood poki which has fresh toasted sesame seeds, shrimp and squid.

Hawaiian burger

A juicy burger with a patty made of 100 percent beef; a highly recommended dish. What makes it truly delightful? The grilled pineapple wedged between the bun and the beef patty. It brings out the sweetness of the burger and makes eating it even more tender.

Hawaiian hotdog

Enclosed within the bun is a bacon wrapped hotdog that is perfectly grilled. Topped with a pineapple salsa, the hotdog sandwich also comes with a chili garlic mango sauce.

Hangloose fries

With the love we have for fries, a bowl of hangloose fries is an excellent choice and makes a good appetizer or a side dish to any meal. The fries come with a chili garlic mayo sauce. The real zinger is the shredded spareribs mixed with the fries, the tenderized meat glazed with barbecue sauce and put on top of the fries.

Beef kalbi short ribs

The beef kalbi is the dish that will satisfy one’s meat cravings. It’s a good cut of the beef and the tender meat pairs great with the signature pineapple rice of Shaka. The beef kalbi’s sauce is a winner as well.

Surf’s upside down pineapple cake

For those looking for a sweet treat, this pineapple cake is a good bet. It’s a hefty portion of pineapple pound cake that has been grilled. It comes with grilled slices of pineapple that enhances the flavor. Adding to the decadence of the dish is a scoop of ice cream with a drizzle of coconut pineapple cream caramel.

Hawaiian halo-halo

Halo-halo is a well loved Filipino dish. With Hawaiian food being, in roots, a mixture of cultures, it comes as no surprise that Shaka gives this halo-halo a twist. Shying away from the iced taste traditional halo-halo offers, the Hawaiian halo-halo tastes like a fruit salad with the amount of fruits in it!
