Listen to my pain

- EVELYN R. LUAB eveluab@yahoo.com

Today, Tuesday is my deadline to submit my article for Sunday, yet I feel so helpless. After reading about Ernesto Abella’s comments on Vice President Leni Robredo and Sen. Risa Hontiveros, and his comment on Edsa, I feel so defeated and low.

There is something very depressing about the state of affairs of our nation. The immediate arrest of Sen. Leila de Lima was a blow to all of us women. When apologists strut and smirk to justify her persecution, I get so nauseated by the blatant lies.

I worry about the rebirth of the death penalty, of the law to lower the age of accountability of minors, and the possible death of our freedoms.

So much is wrong not only in our nation but even in our city. Workers are worried about losing their jobs in banks and the pay and reward system is being clearly implemented.

How does one get out of this aura of helplessness? Can certain men really claim that they alone know categorically and dogmatically what is best for all of us? What arrogance! So few are voicing their disgust publicly at the chaos we are in but I suppose that is the result of the fear of repercussions.

Even those people who go on TV to give their interviews in perfect English know that no amount of rhetorics or excuses can explain their stand on anything now. How sad to have opportunists who feel that they have to talk themselves blue in the face in order to convince us of their stand.

I suppose, I have grown old with experience and age to know that repression will continue.

Did we think that one day, certain apologists would look down on our non-violent means of toppling a dictator? Why must they forget what we did to get rid of a dictator?

To Mr. Jim Paredes, and the Apo Hiking Society, plus all the hundreds of others who were there, we never really imagined that today we would be hearing a lot of garbage.

To the Marcoses who are trying to rewrite history, it’s too early to start your ploy. So many people who were at Edsa are still alive.

I miss our Claro M. Recto, our Tañada and so many others who believed that the Filipino deserved defending. I take my hat off to Rene Saguisag and wish that some of his companions were still alive too.

To certain senators and congressmen who swim with the tide. Do you hear my cry of pain?
