I Saw the Sign!

- BY HANNAH V. OBAL

When driving, the most important thing to remember is to always be attentive. Keeping one’s eyes on the road is key to driving safely, but along with that, understanding the different traffic signs is just as important.

One cannot exactly follow them if one simply cannot understand what they mean, right?

Here are a few basic signs to get one started on being a knowledgeable and safe driver. a.) Left lane/Right lane ends

This sign is there to tell one that the lane they are on, left or right, is about to end and is about to merge with the adjacent lane. Usually, this sign warns drivers to slow down and slowly make a move into the adjacent lane. b.) Yield

This infamous sign, usually represented by a triangle with either a black or red border, and white or yellow background with the word ‘yield’ on it means one is expected to slow down, and drive with extra caution. It means one must let traffic in the intersection or close to it go first, and that stopping is necessary and only when the way is clear should one go. c.) Two-way traffic

A common signage out on the streets but widely ignored by many, this sign simply reminds drivers that they must exercise caution when entering a twoway road.

Meaning, please do not hog all the space on the road or drive as if one owns the road. This sign is put up to deter one from doing exactly that. d.) Keep intersection clear

Another widely popular sign, this sign tells one that an intersection is up ahead; and that, if there is heavy traffic or a chance that one cannot move beyond the intersection due to build of traffic ahead, the intersection must be kept clear of vehicles. Why? So as to avoid tangles and further complications on the road. Blocking intersections almost always result to very heavy traffic. e.) Slippery road sign

No. This does not mean that one has the freedom to drive around until skid marks appear on the road. This quite the opposite. If this sign can be seen, slowing down and being cautious is important, as this means that the road ahead is slippery, and prone to accidents if one drives recklessly.
