A new era in PH basketball

A CHAMPIONSHIP in the 2012 William Jones Cup in Taiwan, runner-up in 2013 and 2015 FIBA Asia Championship, the first win in the world stage since the 1970s in the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup against Senegal. Is this enough for our own Gilas Pilipinas?

The 2019 Fiba Basketball World Cup will be different one than the previous editions of the prestigious event in the world of Basketbal. In this edition of world cup, there will be a home-andaway qualifying games , which makes it difficult for our own national team, which currently consists of Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) players like Terrence Romeo and Calvin Abueva because of the scheduling of games. This also concerns other countries whose players play at the different basketball leagues in the world like the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the Turkish Airlines Euroleague.

Is this the new era for the Gilas Pilipinas?

The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) should concentrate on getting the new players to play on the national team from the collegiate and amateur leagues in our country before they get drafted in the PBA. Train these players and give them a taste of international competitions.

Even if our Olympic dream ended this July, we have gained respect from different countries when it comes to our “Pinoy Style” of playing basketball. With the new era of Philippie Basketball is approaching, the “puso” will always be there. Jesher Tolentino
