Chinese fugitive studying in PHL arrested
A 27-YEAR-OLD Chinese national who is wanted in his country was arrested by Bureau of Immigration (BI) at their office in Quezon City while trying to renew his expired student visa last week.
Immigration Commissioner Jaime Morente said He Hui is now detained at the BI jail in Bicutan, Taguig City following his arrest last July 26 inside the BI-Student Visa Section office at the Quezon City Hall bldg.
He said that the Chinese fugitive - wanted for economic crimes in China - had been staying and studying in the Philippines since fleeing his country to avoid arrest and prosecution.
Morente explained that Hui had just applied for the renewal of his expired student visa when the employees discovered that the applicant’s name was on the bureau’s watchlist of wanted alien fugitives.
“We will deport him for being an undesirable and illegally staying alien,” Morente said.
Hui is an undocumented alien due to the cancellation of his passport by the Chinese government.
Records showed that Hui had been studying at the Lyceum Northwestern University (LNU) since last year.
“We are following the marching orders of President Duterte to bring back confidence in government, by making our people’s lives safer. Within our own scope, this arrest of a fugitive from the law is part of our contribution to the commitment for a better, safer Philippines,” the BI chief said.
On the other hand, Atty. Ma. Antonette Mangrobang, BI spokesperson, said the bureau will ask the LNU to explain why it should not be sanctioned for allowing Hui to enroll this semester without requiring him to renew his visa. (FP/Sunnex)
