Ateneo Eagles soar over USC Warriors
SHS-AdC Magis Eagles show no mercy against USC Warriors to extend unbeaten run in Cesafi
WHAT was supposed to be a close contest between undefeated teams turned out to be a one-sided affair as the Sacred Heart SchoolAteneo de Cebu Magis Eagles showed teamwork trumps anything.
Fourteen of the 15 players from Ateneo scored at least two points in their easy 69-43 win over rival University of San Carlos in the high school division of the 2014 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum last night.
The Magis Eagles pulled away for good after holding the Warriors to just one field goal in the second quarter.
USC was hot on the heels of the Eagles in the opening quarter before SHS-AdC imposed its presence in the middle to dominate the offensive rebounds and get second-chance points.
SHS-AdC had a slim six-point lead, 18-13, before the Warriors started to self-destruct. They committed a string of turnovers, leading to a 14-1 by the Eagles. USC only scored its lone field goal at the 4:23 mark of the second period and at the end of the first half, SHS-AdC was safely ahead by 22 points, 40-18.
The Eagles had their biggest lead at 31 points 55-24 following a 15-0 run that was capped by Phil Renzo Calumpang’s triple.
With the game already in the pocket, coach Rommel Rasmo had the luxury of resting his ace players in preparation for the 1 p.m. game against the University of Cebu Baby Webmasters today.
Jan-Jan Jaboneta led SHS-AdC scorers with nine points and the Magis Eagles picked their fourth straight win. Jean-Jacques Antigua topscored for USC’s with 12 points. It was the Warriors first loss in four games.
In the other high school games, the University of the Visayas Baby Lancers had an easy 77-47 win over the Cebu Eastern College Dragons. JC Escalona and Theo Joshua Flores had 20 and 19 points, respectively, for the Baby Lancers’s fourth win in five games. Ivan Mate and Richmond Buli-Buli finished with 16 and 14 points, respectively, for the Dragons, who dropped to 1-3.
The Cebu Institute of Technology-University Wildkittens meanwhile handed Don Bosco Technological Center Greywolves their sixth straight loss, 85-48.
Justine Langres, Jasper Berezo and Joshua Manatad combined for 51 points for CIT-U while Mark Anthony Agustinez Juan and Miguel Dela Torre scored 12 and 10 points, respectively for DBTC.
Today, the USC Warriors (4-1) and the Southwestern University Cobras (5-0) will face off in the main game at 5:30, while USJ-R Jaguars (1-4) will try to get back at the UC Webmasters (1-4) in the 4 p.m. game.
USC seemed headed for an upset win over SWU last Aug. 3, before Jasper Parker scored the winning basket, 69-67.
