Markki not afraid of gay roles

MANILA—Singer Markki Stroem, who plays a gay in the upcoming Cinema One Originals 2012 main feature entrant Slumber Party, said he is not afraid of being typecast.

“It’s a matter of how I take it in a sense. It is an acting role. It’s turning to a different experience. It’s growing (up)—having different characters in my acting belt. This is a variation. This is acting, learning to be a different person every time,” he said on CinemaNews.

Directed by Emmanuel Dela Cruz, the comedy movie is about a tied-up frat boy and three curious gays top billed by Markki, Archie Alemania and RK Bagatsing.

According to Markki, he enjoyed working on the film because the cast went through rigorous research and training to perfect each movement.

“Ako yung kontrabida na fashion designer. It’s a comedy which features the lives of our gay friends and (how we can) truly understand them as people,” he said.

The singer-turned-actor added: “Kakaiba yung experience, sobrang fun. Four weeks ang preparation time namin. Pumunta kami sa mga hangout places nila para makita din namin paano sila mag- interact, yung hand gestures, paano sila mag-isip kasi ang bilis talaga nila mag-isip.”

Slumber Party is one of the 13 competing films in the eighth season of Cinema One Originals. The film festival will run from Nov. 28 to Dec. 9 at Robinson’s Galleria Movie World and from Nov. 29 to Dec. 4 at the Edsa Shang Cineplex.

The 2012 Cinema One Originals Festival is an annual project of Cinema One, the local cable channel, owned and operated by Creative Programs Inc.
