UC Jaguars shoots up in BBEAL season 29

THE UNIVERSITY of the Cordillera­s has pulled off a surprise after taking the lead in the over-all standings of the Baguio-Benguet Educationa­l Athletic League season 29.

Scoring 491 points, The UC Jaguars has strengthen­ed their bid for BBEAL’s season 29 overall title in the final stretch of competitio­ns for the largest collegiate sports associatio­n in North Luzon.

UC, with seven titles at hand, edged University of Baguio Cardinals who are currently second with 474 points.

The roaring Jaguars collected gold medals in the men and women’s wushu, women’s softball,

women’s lawn tennis, men’s judo, women’s badminton, and men’s athletics.

Despite the setback during the first of competitio­n, UC scored huge points in the second phase of the tournament.

UB on the other hand had strong showing in tae kwon do (men and women), archery ( men and women), women’s table tennis, men’s swimming, men’s lawn tennis, women’s judo, women’s chess, and women’s athletics.

Season 28 champion Saint Louis University are down at the third spot with 439.5 points with four titles which include table tennis ( men), swimming ( women), chess (men), and badminton ( men).

The Philippine Military Academy Cavaliers are also gunning to maintain last year’s fourth place performanc­e with 258 points, as Benguet State University Wildcats, who has titles in sepak takraw, men’s softball, and baseball are looking turn the tides with 241 points.

Coming in at number six are new comers King’s College of the Philippine­s Tigers with 72 points, followed by its La Trinidad neighbour Cordillera Career Developmen­t College Admirals with 70.5 points.

Pines City Colleges Warriors are ranked eighth with 67 points, followed by the University of the Philippine­s-Baguio Maroons ( 65 points), season’s host Baguio Central University ( 33 points), and the Baguio College of Technology with zero points.

The 11-school conclave awaits the results of basketball and volleyball, which continues as of press time.

Since 2015, BBEAL adopted the point system which enables them to tag the overall champions for the entire collegiate sporting season.

The point system will be based on the number of athletes and schools participat­ing in each event.

For events participat­ed by ten schools, 50 points will be awarded for the first placers, 40 points for the second placers, 35 for third, 30 for fourth, 25, 20, 15, 10, eight and six points accordingl­y.

Meanwhile, for competitio­ns competed by at least three schools points awarding will be 10, eight, and six. Points will be based on the matrix provided by the revised rules and regulation­s of BBEAL.
