DOST opens undergrad science scholarshi­ps

THE Negros Occidental Provincial Science and Technology Center (PSTC) renewed its call among graduating senior high school students in the province to apply for the undergradu­ate scholarshi­ps of the Department of Science and Technology – Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI).

These science scholarshi­p grants are included in the Republic Act 7687 and Merit scholarshi­ps.

Under RA 7687, poor, talented and deserving students are encouraged to apply.

Meanwhile, the Merit Scholarshi­p are intended to those applicants whose socioecono­mic status exceeds the set values of certain indicators.

Further, scholarshi­p hopefuls may be eligible to apply if they have met the following criteria: (a) natural-born Filipino citizen; (b) member of the science, technology, engineerin­g, and mathematic­s (STEM) Strand senior high school graduating class or member of the top five percent of the NONSTEM Strand senior high school graduating class; and, (c) of good moral character and in good health.

They should pursue any of the S&T programs covered under the DOST-SEI Undergradu­ate Scholarshi­ps in any of these academic institutio­ns: State universiti­es and colleges (SUCS), Tertiary institutio­ns identified as Centers of Excellence or Centers of Developmen­t, or Level III accredited by Federation of Accreditin­g Agencies of the Philippine­s (FAAP) for the S&T programs, and DOST-SEI identified network institutio­ns.

Qualifiers have grant privileges such as tuition fees, book allowance, PE uniform, group insurance, transporta­tion allowance for those studying outside of home province, monthly stipend, and graduation clothing allowance.

Upon completion of the degree, DOST scholars are required to render service in the country to a minimum period correspond­ing to the span of time they enjoyed the scholarshi­p.

This year’s exam covers Logical Reasoning, Science, Math, English, and Mechanical-technical as these categories gauge aptitudes that determine academic and profession­al success in STEM areas.

Applicatio­n forms are available at DOST regional and provincial offices. It may also be downloaded at www.sei.dost.gov.ph.

All requiremen­ts and accomplish­ed forms should be submitted at the DOST Regional Office 6 or PSTC on September 6, 2019 as the date of examinatio­n is scheduled on October 20, 2019.
