Sony unveils first 4K smartphone camera with Sony Xperia Z5 series

- By Marlet D. Salazar

THE SMARTPHONE market may look a bit crowded with the entry of different brands hoping to get a slice of the pie. However, it didn’t stop Japanese technology firm Sony to come up with yet another first: first 4K or ultra-high definition resolution smartphone.

Online definition refers to 4K as “a display device or content having horizontal resolution on the order of 4,000 pixels. Several 4K resolutions exist in the fields of digital television and digital cinematography.”

Manufacturers are banking heavily on their smartphone cameras’ capabilities— making it one of the major selling points when introducing a new model.

“Since users already create, share and enjoy most of their content on the go— we’ve set out to bring Sony’s latest innovations in camera, design and display to make sure the Xperia Z5 series is the best possible lifestyle and entertainment platform,” said Noboyushi Otake, president and managing director of Sony Philippines.

Sony Xperia Z5, Compact and Premium promise to deliver images that casual snap- shooters would be proud of.

The 4K technology is available in Sony Xperia Z5 Premium, which offers a sharp, vivid 5.5” 4K Triluminos display for mobile and IPS ( Inplane switching is a screen technology used for liquid crystal displays or LCDs). Images taken with another device will be upscaled when uploaded in Sony Xperia Z5 Premium. The new camera phone also debunks myths on megapixels as it offers only 8 MP while other phones boasts of 10 to even 16 MP.

Xperia Z5 Premium ( price to be announced) is designed from the ground up as a high- performance mobile device, also powered by the Snapdragon 810 processor. A highcapacity 3430 mAh battery lasting for up to two days, with QC 2.0 capability, eliminates the need for regular charging. It features a large 32GB internal memory, with the capability to take a 200GB external microSD card, which offers extra room for 4K videos and movies, and images too.

The new Xperia Z5 ( P35,990) features an F2.0 G lens, which is said to be Sony’s first completely re- imagined smartphone camera module since Xperia Z1; it is also designed with Sony’s interchangeable lens camera technology for clear, vivid imagery.

The camera is capable of the fastest autofocus in a smartphone, a blend of speed and accuracy to cap- ture split- second moments. It delivers a speed of just 0.037 seconds— faster than the blink of a human eye ( average 0.1- 0.4 seconds).

Xperia Z5 Compact ( P29,990) shares almost all the same revolutionary technology only in a smaller size with Xperia Z5.

Xperia Z5 and Xperia Z5 Compact are powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor, featuring octacore CPUs, 64 bit capabilities and ultra- fast 4G LTE speeds. Both smartphones are equipped with up to two- day battery stamina and power- saving technology. With Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 enabled on the new devices, users can get 5.5 hours usage with just 10 minutes of charging with the QC2.0 Quick Charger UCH10.

Xperia Z5 and Z5 Compact are now available at all Sony Centers and Sony Mobile Stores nationwide, while Xperia Z5 Premium will be available on Dec. 3.
