NCCA’S Sayaw Pinoy pays tribute to iconic Philippine dances
SAYAW Pinoy, the longest-running and most-attended program of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) for the Philippine Arts Festival (PAF), will be held again across the county this February in connection with National Arts Month.
Sayaw Pinoy is the flagship project of the NCCA-National Committee on Dance (NCD) under Shirley Halili-Cruz.
Theme of the 2013 PAF is Icons. In line with the theme, Sayaw Pinoy will include video documentation of 25 dance icons representing different regions of the country:
Kauyaw, Ilocano A Nasudi, Mashota, Sayaw sa Obando, Subli and Maglalatik, Pandanggo sa Ilaw, Pantomina, Ati-Ati sa Bukid, Sinulog, Kuratsa and Tinikling, Pansak Yakan and Talak-Soht, Dugso, Sugo Uno and Medal Tahil, Sagayan and Pangalay, Binanog, Cayao and Bendian, Singkil and Silong sa Gading, Cariñosa.
The documentation will be distributed to public schools as part of the NCCA’s assistance to the Department of Education’s Special Program for the Arts.
Since its inception 11 years ago, Sayaw Pinoy has been providing opportunities for young dance groups all over the country to showcase their talent. It also gives emerging and small dance organizations the opportunity to perform and learn from professional dance companies. It has engaged municipalities which may not have been reached by NCCA programs and assistance in the past.
Sayaw Pinoy 2013 will be in Olongapo on Feb. 2; Baguio, Feb. 89; and Dumaguete, Feb. 15-16. It will be in Zamboanga del Sur Feb. 22-24.
On Feb. 3, 10 and 24, Sayaw Pinoy will be at Concert at the Park in Luneta.
Participating schools include St. Pedro Poveda College, Miriam College, St. Paul University, Silliman University, St. Louis University, Bicol University, Letran College and Adamson University.
Sayaw Pinoy will also tour SM Malls, Star Malls and Marquee Mall.
Presidential Proclamation 683 in 1991 declared February as National Arts Month (NAM), with the NCCA as lead agency for the celebration.
Different NAM activities were consolidated in 2007 under the PAF. The NCCA’s Subcommission on the Arts—consisting of the National Committees on Architecture, Cinema, Dance, Literature, Music, Theater and Visual Arts—spearheads PAF.
