Ferragamo at the Olympics
SALVATORE FERRAGAMO designed the uniforms that the athletes of the Republic of San Marino wore during the 2012 London Olympics.
The brand’s DNA is reflected in the uniforms’ sophisticated balance of contrasting styles: tailoring meets sportswear, beauty and luxury side by side with functionality and comfort, handcrafted paired with hi-tech.
The result is a complete men’s and women’s collection with outfits for any occasion that ranged from leisure wear to evening dresses.
The athletes wore blue bias-cut linen blazers over crêpe de Chine shirts with white cotton trousers during official events. For formal evenings, the classic sheath dress turned into a total white silk crêpe dress, its neckline graced with a small organdie drape. The shoes in porcelain-colored nappa were square toes with a Vara bow.
The garments designed for leisure included a reproportioned trench, an ultralightweight summer jacket that doubled up as a vest, a reversible two-tone belt, as well as evergreens such as a cashmere pullover, a button-down poplin shirt, beige trousers and blue nappa loafers. The brand’s iconic bag, the Sofia, came in a small version in luminous ecru calfskin to complete the collection.
The interplay of innovation and sartorial tradition was visible in the modular, multipurpose garments, such as the knitted jacket with a removable nylon quilt vest. Menswear classics came in new weights and forms, such as a straight-cut trench, a passepartout slipping elegantly over the zip-up cashmere turtle neck, blue chinos and dark brown loafers.
For more formal occasions, the elegance of a (practically imperceptible) pinstripe suit was highlighted by total black Oxford lace-ups. A more relaxed style came with the combination of a blue blazer and beige chinos. These came with three indispensable travelling companions: a large leather duffle bag, a small shoulder bag and a beauty case.
