I.Norte villagers activate ‘basura patrol’

-

LAOAG CITY -- All roads leading to the Burgos town proper in Ilocos Norte make one take a second look -- it is free of scattered garbage.

Credit goes to the local residents of Poblacion for activating the so-called ‘Basura Patrol”, a village-initiated program where they adopt a highway and take turns in monitoring it.

As a model of the cleanest and greenest village in the province, Poblacion village chief Joegie Jimenez said Wednesday the “Basura Patrol” team ensures that public places such as the major thoroughfares, roads, sidewalks, canals, parks, and esteros (canal) are garbagefree.

As host to gigantic windmills, solar farms and white rocks formation where tourists frequently go, Jimenez said it has already become their way of life to keep their surroundings clean and green to entice more visitors

to visit their place.

Since 2011 or in time for the annual environment month celebration, Poblacion village officials continue to conduct coastal and highway clean-up drives and massive information dissemination on zero waste management.

“Over the years, we have observed that lesser garbage is being collected since we put up signage and garbage receptacles in strategic places. It could have been better if visitors will have a briefing first at the tourist center to dispose of their garbage properly,” Jimenez said.

As part of their advocacy, the barangay hall located along the national highway showcases recycled plastic materials which they can turn into cash.

During their free time, village communities gather as they make bracelets and leis out of colored magazines, brochures, and other recycled papers.

Some of them are also engaged in making decorative items and other waste recycling products, and selling them to interested buyers.

“We are thankful to the community, our volunteers and sponsors for supporting our programs. Together, we can make every barangay clean, peaceful and orderly by doing our part as responsible stewards of nature,” he added.
