- BY KAITHREEN CRUZ

HE Department of Education (DepEd) has created the Private Education Office (PEO) that will provide necessary support and services to private education institutions.

Through DepEd Order 9 series of 2022, the PEO will take the lead in all matters about private education lodged in the DepEd Central Office and assist the Education secretary in ensuring that the department’s mandate relative to private education is fulfilled in all levels of governance.

“It is expected to lead a wholeof-agency approach toward the institutionalization of publicprivate complementarity across all governance levels through appropriate interventions including, but not limited to, the development of strategic directions and frameworks on the complementary roles of public and private institutions in the basic education system,” DepEd said in a statement released on March 18, 2022.

Additionally, it should make recommendations to officials on all matters concerning private education that are addressed to the department and monitor their resolutions.

Education Secretary Leonor Briones assured that the PEO will provide both technical and financial support to private schools in need.

“With the establishment of the PEO, DepEd can now fully exercise its supervisory and regulatory functions and continue to implement programs of assistance to schools, learners, teachers and other personnel in private education,” she said.

The newly established office will also collaborate with other branches of DepEd and its stakeholders to gather feedback and assess its contribution to the organizational effectiveness in the fulfillment of the department’s mandate relative

to private education matters.

The PEO will be temporarily placed under the supervision of the Office of the Undersecretary currently servicing as the Alternate Representative of the Secretary as Chairperson of the Private Education Assistance Committee (PEAC) and will be placed under the supervision of the Office of the Undersecretary for Curriculum and Instruction after one year unless otherwise decided by the incumbent DepEd secretary.
