WOMAN DIES IN CAR- TRUCKS COLLISION
A WOMAN died while two others were injured after a Grab taxi was crushed by three trucks along Nagtahan Bridge in Santa Mesa, Manila on Tuesday. The victim, Ivory Abaya, was on board the taxi with Karen Graneta on their way home from work at about 3: 40 a. m. when the smash- up happened. Police said truck driver Edison Gonzales claimed that his vehicle lost its brakes while going down the bridge and crashed in front of another truck. It skidded to the Grab taxi and crashed in front of still another truck. Taxi driver Antonio Maraya and Graneta were injured. Gonzales was held for investigation.
CEBGO PASSENGER HURT DURING EVACUATION
A PASSENGER of Cebgo Flight DG6577 sustained a minor injury during an evacuation process on Monday evening at the Cebu- Mactan International Airport after its Cebu- to-Tacloban flight was aborted, Cebu Pacific Air (CEB), operator of Cebgo, said on Tuesday. The airline said the aircraft was forced to abort the takeoff because of fluctuating oil indication on one of the engines. While taxiing for return to the terminal, a wheel of the aircraft-- an Airbus ATR 72- 500-- caught fire, prompting immediate evacuation of the 67 passengers and crew. CEB said all the people onboard were safely evacuated but a passenger was hurt. The passenger was not named. Meanwhile, the Manila International Airport Authority said six international flights were canceled on Tuesday because of bad weather. Affected flights were China Airlines Flight CI702/ CI703 ( Manila-Taipei- Manila), Philippine Airlines PR428/ PR427 ( Manila- Narita- Manila) and PR896/ PR897 ( Manila- Kansai- Manila).
3 CHARRED HEADS FOUND IN QUEZON
MULANAY, Quezon: Three unidentified burned heads were found in separate locations in Barangay Cambuga, this town on Monday. Police were informed that at about 10 a. m., Melecia Aranda noticed a burned object on a grassy area that she mistook for a charred coconut. The object turned out to be a human charred head. At about 11: 30 a. m. of same day, another two burned heads were found by Ricardo Nano inside a sack, about 50 meters away from Aranda's place. Police are investigating the case.
GENSAN GROUP STAGES RALLY VS PHASEOUT OF ‘COLORUM’ TRICYCLES
THOUSANDS of members of Gensan Transport Workers Association, mostly tricycle drivers and operators, staged a protest action against an order of General Santos City Mayor Ronnel Rivera to clear the city of “colorum” (unlicensed) tricycles. The group demanded that they be given a grace period of two years so that they would be able to find alternative livelihood. But Rivera said the city’s transport code states that drivers with no franchise or permit to operate will have their tricycles impounded. This would mean that only 7,000 franchised tricycles will be allowed to operate. The order took effect last month. General Santos recorded 50,000 tricycles plying the city, covering 27 barangay (villages). Gerbert Demos, Sentro ng mga Nagkakaisa at Progresibong Manggagawa chairman, said they will continue their mass action until their appeal is heard by the city government.
ILOILO OPENS FIRST SUNDOWN CLINIC FOR MSM, TRANSGENDER
ILOILO CITY: The first public sundown clinic, from 5 to 11 p. m. Monday to Friday excluding holidays, will be open to the public in this city on October 3 to serve the needs of male having sex with male ( MSM) and transgenders. City STI, HIV and AIDS program coordinator Ma. Odeta Villaruel said the Iloilo City Social Hygiene Clinic and Department of Health regional office established the sundown clinic for STI and HIV prevention, testing and treatment services to MSM and transgender people. Villaruel added that with the increasing cases of HIV among MSM, a need for the health facilities, particularly the social hygiene clinic, to rebrand and make them more attractive and MSM and transgender-friendly facilities. The country has been experiencing an upsurge in HIV infections in the last three years. According to the Integrated HIV Behavioral and Serological Surveillance conducted by the DOH-NEC, the country’s new HIV infections were occurring in males, particularly MSM.
HELP FOR 306 BANNED DANISH SEIN FISHERS IN CAGAYAN
TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan: To assist affected workers and fishermen banned for using Danish seine (locally known as Buli-buli) fishing gear, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) allocated P13.5 million worth of fishing equipment and gears to compensate them. BFAR’s Region 2 Director Milagros Morales said the help is underway for some 306 buli-buli workers in the coastal town of Buguey as the fisheries bureau undertakes the massive construction of fiberglass fishing boats. BFAR Director Eduardo Gongona approved P13.5 million fund for the construction of 102 fiberglass boats and fishing gears – gill nets, multiple handline, squid jigger and fish trap including training expenses. According to BFAR, the buli-buli fishing gear is prohibited due to its destructive nature using a rectangular concrete block which acts as sinker of the nets causing it to scrape and destroy the sea bottom and corals. Found violating the order will be meted maximum of 10 years in jail and a fine between P100,000 and P500,000 or both fine and imprisonment. The boat and gear used are also confiscated.
