- Chair:

The year’s most important energy industry event gets underway today, September 27, at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City, Metro Manila. Powertrends 2017 joins forces with the ASEAN Energy Business Forum (AEBF) 2017.

This comes at at a year when the ASEAN marks its 50th Anniversary, and energy is becoming foremost and relevant on many fronts.

Powertrends was launched in 1995 for the Department of Energy (DoE) and the National Power Corporation during the height of the energy crisis in the Philippines, to gather under one roof the major international energy players and introduce them to the Philippine market and the relevant government agencies and private companies. It was organized by Leverage International, and eventually became a regular biennial event supported by the DoE, and relevant industry agencies and industry associations. In 2016, Powertrends became an annual event.

The AEBF is an international conference and exhibition that promote the development of ASEAN energy sector. It combines the highest level of ASEAN energy meetings with business and policy-related activities. AEBF is where the energy policymakers from the 10 ASEAN Member-States meet with the private sector.

Combining with Powertrends, the annual AEBF is held in conjunction with the ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting, which is this year being hosted by the DoE.

With the celebration of the 50th anniversary of ASEAN this year, the ASEAN Member States are determined to highlight the potentials and opportunities as ASEAN Economic Community, including in the energy sector. Organized by the ASEAN Centre for Energy and its co-organizer, Leverage International, this year’s AEBF picks up the theme “Regional Security, Sustainability and Resiliency.”

At Powertrends, there will be free technical sessions for the attendees, as well as an international exhibition on energy, power and electricity, and networking cocktails for ASEAN government officials, exhibitors and delegates. There will also be showcases on the latest technologies for energy and power development, and energy projects in ASEAN-member countries.

The AEBF 2017, meanwhile, will include a high-level Ministers-CEOs Dialogue between the 10 ASEAN Energy Ministers and CEOs of active energy companies in the region, and a Gala Dinner for the ASEAN Energy Awards Ceremony.
