TUCP wants consenting romance in the office

- By SAMUEL P. MEDENILLA

If additional pay and incentives won’t work, why not try romance to woo workers into performing better?

This was the proposal of the country’s largest labor group to companies, who would like to boost the morale of their employees without spending a single peso.

“Many do not know that workplace romance policy, by tweaking its provisions, can boost productivity and creativity of the employees… because when workers are in love they tend to work harder,” Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) spokesperson Alan Tanjusay in text message.

TUCP made the proposal since some companies tend to discourage workplace romantic relationships among its workers out of fear it may negatively affect their performance.

It urged the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) to come out with a guideline to mainstream workplace romance policy, which it claimed will be beneficial for both companies and workers.

The proposed regulation will govern romance relationship between superiors and subordinates or among employees.

“Workplace romance policy is uncommon among employer-employee contracts and even in collective bargaining agreements between unions and management in the Philippines,” Tanjusay said.

“The DOLE must set the standard by issuing a workplace romance policy guideline so that consenting co-workers especially those without a union will be protected from oppressive management prerogative actions,” he added.
