Finland ambassador to the Phl Juha Pyykkö is EU 2022 Gender Champion
Ambassador of Finland to the Philippines Juha Marku Pyykkö is the European Union (EU) Gender Champion for 2022. According to the embassy, Ambassador Pyykkö will be promoting women’s and girls’ rights and empowerment together with colleagues in the EU and local actors.
“Gender equality remains an important policy objective for the EU and its Member States, including my native Finland,” he said.
Advancing gender equality and women’s rights requires an everyday individual and collective step, may it be big or small, he added.
“On a more concrete level, as a superior, as a boss in the Finnish Foreign Service, and currently the Head of Mission of our embassy here, I strive to make sure that all my staff, both women and men, feel comfortable and feel secure at work and flourish at work without fear of discrimination.”
On a more personal level, as a husband to a strong Finnish woman and as a father of three, two of whom are boys, Ambassador Pyykkö makes an effort every day to walk the talk about gender equality and set a good example for his sons.
“I feel that it’s important for all of us to stay open and sensitive to the need to advance gender equality individually and collectively,” he said.
Ambassador Pyykkö is the first resident ambassador of Finland to the Philippines since Finland closed its embassy in Manila in 2012. During the interim, Finland was represented in the Philippines by its non-resident ambassador based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
