Let us stand united and turn Sulu from terrorism to tourism

MUNICIPALITY OF TALIPAO, Sulu — War-torn and power-less Barangay Kagay Elementary School (Kagay ES) found itself the beneficiary of UP’s Upsilon Sigma Phi’s new Multimedia Learning Center (MMLC) which was inaugurated last 31 August.

Kagay ES MMLC will be powered by the first off-grid rooftop solar with battery power system, which was installed by the Philippine National Oil Company Renewables Corporation (PNOC-RC) who also designed the 2.28 kWp solar with 189.6Vdc and 9.02A battery system which can provide power to the basic necessities of the MMLC for the school children.

This came along with donations of an S14514IWL Lenovo computer, Bose sound system, Epson wide-screen projector, Pixma portable printer and two electric fans.

The Special Forces Regiment Airborne (SFRA) of the Philippine Army identified Kagay ES, which was established in 1982 with 10 teachers and 380 students from Kindergarten to Grade 6, as the beneficiary of the project given the group’s thrust to restore education, electricity and peace.

“Our coming here has nothing to do with our military operations, but we are here for our peace and development campaign. Let us stand united and turn Sulu from terrorism to tourism,” Western Mindanao Commander three-star Gen. Cirilito Sobejana said.

The Upsilon Sigma Phi Alumni Association, Upsilon Sigma Phi Batch 1993 and the 2nd Special Forces Battalion agreed that with better educational resources, the children in Talipao and Patikul of the Province of Sulu can have better opportunities, which hopefully will lead to lasting peace.
