MUSCAT: Japanese companies have been invited to bring their expertise and technology to Duqm, where a number of manufacturing and processing industries are currently setting up operations.

With Duqm looking to attract companies to Oman to set up industries across a host of sectors, including manufacturing, mining, transport, logistics, shipping and many others, the Embassy of Oman in Tokyo has launched meetings with Japanese companies to see if they are interested in beginning operations in the city, much of which is still in its planning stages.

“The Embassy launched a series of meetings with major Japanese companies to promote the special economic zone in Duqm,” said a statement from Oman’s embassy in Tokyo.

“A special corner has also been set up to promote Duqm at the embassy’s reception for the 49th National Day.”

While the country is keen to bring foreign companies to Oman, it is also keen to see domestic companies expand in Duqm, and SEZAD, the Special Economic Zone Authority of Duqm, the organisation that is overseeing the planning and implementation of projects in the still-developing city, recently met with teams from Petroleum Development

Oman to spread awareness of the ongoing work in Duqm.

“The authority made a visual presentation to the employees of the company of Petroleum Development Oman,” said a SEZAD official. “This presentation was about Duqm’s special economic zone and its current projects and investment opportunities. The presentation was made by Jalal Al Lawati, the director of marketing and promotion.”

To accommodate all of the new projects that are currently underway in Duqm, and as part of the expansion plans for the city, the area’s existing road network is currently being expanded. This will enable better transportation both within Duqm, as well as to other cities.

“Duqm has witnessed the opening of road number one and its related traffic projects, while road number five, which has reached its final stages, will be opened in the coming days,” added SEZAD.
