An accident that spelt disaster for Indian expatriate’s family
Santhosh has been undergoing a series of surgeries since the accident last year and since his veins are affected, he won’t be able to fly due to the aircraft pressure
REJIMON K reji@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: Everything was normal with Santhosh (name changed), an Indian expatriate who lived with his family in Seeb, till the night of May 26 last year.
New projects were flowing in, business was growing and, what’s more, there was happiness all around in the family.
On that fateful night, when he was replacing the punctured tyre of his car by the roadside, disaster struck him. A car came and hit him, sandwiching him between the bumpers of the two cars.
Since then, he has been suffering losses one after the other. His business started to decline and for the last one year, having remained bedridden and still depending on surgeries and medicines, he and his family have been spending days of despair, and staring at a gloomy future.
Tragic incident
“I was running my own successful business. We were getting new projects. Everything was fine. I could have never thought that this kind of thing would happen to me,” Santhosh added.
“It may take a few more months to recover. As the injuries are serious, I am advised to undergo my treatment here and complete it. Medics were flown from India. They also advised me to stay here till everything is fine. As the veins are affected, I won’t be able to fly as the aircraft pressure changes and situation can worsen,” Santhosh added.
Being bedridden, he was unable to focus on his business and had to shut it down, sending back his five workers.
“I was not able to handle the business. So, I had to shut it down. I had to bear all the expenses and send back all my workers. Now, even money for daily needs is a big challenge for us. Friends are helping us but the loss in business, zero income, loans, money for medicines and the pending house rent, have all accumulated into thousands of rials. We are totally stranded. We have a roof over our head only because the landlord is a very good person. He has been very compassionate towards us,” Santhosh added.
Meanwhile, Santhosh’s children are continuing their studies, thanks to the benevolence of the school authorities.
“The school has allowed them to continue their studies. At least, it is a blessing,” Santhosh added.
“He and his family are struggling a lot. Only the kindhearted people’s coordinated efforts can rescue them,” Shakeel Ahmed Dabapu, a family friend, said.
