Calendars with local flavour

-

WSUZIE BRUCE hat’s a c a l e ndar and who need s one? Well these days we all need one, whether as an App on our Smartphones or in printed form for a wall in the office or kitchen — if only to remind us of dates or appointments for a cup of coffee with friends, meetings with the boss or a visit to the dentist.

So what’s new in Oman in the way of 2016 calendars (of the Gregorian type)... read on...

The Historical Association of Oman’s annual calendar is always a sought-after favourite. It’s said to be popular due to the information given both in English and its accuracy regarding dates of religious holidays, as well as its very reasonable price. The HAO has been producing a calendar since the 1990s. Most of the photographs this year have been taken by Omanis.

As always this calendar has a variety of colourful scenes — the cover depicts six goats taking a stroll across the Rimal al Sharqiya, and the months January to December show, amongst others, Jebel Misht, the Duqm Rock Garden, traditional horse racing, the date harvest, the monsoon in Dalqut, a newly-born camel and the Royal Opera House Muscat.

This calendar comes with an envelope for posting overseas — cut the corners and the cost of mailing is 80 baisas.

Cost: RO 2 from Borders bookshops.

Another favourite is the ‘Birds in Oman’ calendar produced by the Danish couple, Jens and Hanne Eriksen, and published by Al Roya Publishing.

The Bird Calendar 2016 features 14 images of birds from Oman, some rare that you may never have heard of, others quite common, thus giving a balanced view of the great biodiversity of the country. The 14 images depict: Rose-ringed Parakeet (cover), African Skimmer, Grey Hypocolius, Greater Flamingo, Blue-cheeked Bee-eater, Verreaux’s Eagle, Red-billed Tropicbird, Persian Shearwater, Greater Painted-snipe, Eurasian Golden Oriole, Greyheaded Swamphen, Egyptian Vulture, Caspian Tern and Heuglin’s Gull.

This calendar is available at hotel bookshops and Muscat International Airport.

Cost varies from RO 3.500 - RO 5.
