NEMA Warns Lagosians on Coastal Turbulence

As the rains continue to pour down in torrents, leaving havoc in its wake, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), yesterday warned Lagosians against coastal turbulence.

The agency speaking through its spokespers­on in the South-west Zone, Mr. Ibrahim Farinloye, said caution should be applied because the consistent rains might last till middle of August.

He said because the resultant effect of the consistent downpour might not be favourable especially for fun seekers and coastal dwellers, the agency was calling for utmost caution.

He said: “NEMA is advising all users of inland ways and fun-seekers on the beaches and coastal lines to exercise utmost cautions in the face of turbulent nature of sea, oceans and rivers around the country.

“The turbulence along the coastal lines which have been consistent in the last two weeks may last till middle of August.

“NEMA and other stakeholde­rs have alerted ferry and boats operators on the situations and they are already applying safety measures as dynamic as the situations demands for the benefits of the people.

“The boats operators should not be disturbed by the passengers as they have been applying safety measures as required so far.

“However, different beach operators are being called upon to strengthen their emergency preparedne­ss with rescuers on standby in case of emergency.

“The operators must ensure that fun-seekers are not allowed near the sea when turbulence are observed till it settle down.

“Beach operators are strongly advised to strengthen and equip their medical facilities for first aid assistance for their customers at all times.

“Also, the public is strongly advised to draw the attention of the emergency agencies to distress situations as soon as possible.”
