- By Zahraddeen Yakubu Shuaibu

A former Governor of Kano State and Senator representing Kano Central, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, has expressed concern on how some politicians are allegedly trying to revive the politics of thuggery in the state.

Sen Shekarau who stated this in an interview with the BBC Hausa Service, said it was a serious threat to the ongoing political contest in Kano, as some notable politicians used thugs and arms against their opponents.

The senator said there was a need for the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state to be fair to everyone and not to bar anyone interested from contesting any position.

He said, “It is not wrong for candidates to come out and declare their interest in the governor’s seat. Today, if there are 100 candidates for governorship on the platform of the APC in Kano, let all of them come out; the only thing we can see is that the atmosphere will be politically motivated.”

Sen Shekarau also expressed worry over ongoing attacks and other security challenges bedeviling the country which have resulted in the loss of lives in many states.

He said even if an ant was being killed incessantly “one will feel sorry for the act, talk less of human beings. Nowadays, 50 to 100 are being kidnapped, some killed, including women and children. This is really alarming.”

However, he said the biggest problem that led to the security crises in Nigeria was the lack of justice, adding that only justice for all could solve the problem.

He, therefore, urged the government to come up with a plan for the people to take care of their security, citing the example of the Hisbah Commission he set up in Kano during his tenure as governor, saying it had helped in overcoming the security challenges and bad attitudes among the people.
