Airlines list causes of flight delays, cancellations

- From Abdullateef Aliyu, Lagos

Recent flight delays and cancellations have been blamed on several factors including epileptic fuel supply, inadequate airport infrastructure, unruly passengers, among others.

This emerged yesterday after a meeting of stakeholders convened by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).

The forum was attended by 13 International airlines, eight domestic carriers, and Airport operators - the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and Bi-Courtney Aviation Services.

Daily Trust reports that the meeting was informed by flight delays and cancellations experienced by passengers in recent times. Spokesman of the NCAA, Mr. Sam Adurogboye however said it was resolved that airlines should be realistic in their flight schedules and planning.

The authority which declared in strong terms zero tolerance to flight cancellations/delays assured the operators that all these challenges will be tackled very soon. It was also resolved that the airlines should always disseminate timely information to passengers on their flight status.

NCAA/FAAN also resolved to liaise with the Federal Ministry of Transportation/ Aviation to replace fuel hydrants if the old ones will cost a lot of money to be fixed and the supply points should be connected to the airports.
