Team Nigeria claim 3 medals in wrestling at C’wealth Games

Blessing Onyebuchi, Ebikewenim­o Welson and Bose Samuel yesterday won medals for Team Nigeria in wrestling to increase the country’s medals haul to 11 at the ongoing Commonweal­th Games in Gold Coast, Australia.

Onyebuchi obtained silver after losing to Canada’s Erica Wiebe in the 76kg category female freestyle, while Welson earned a bronze after beating Jan Combrinck of South Africa in the 57kg category male freestyle event.

Samuel also got bronze in the 53kg category of the female freestyle event.

Nigeria’s Ebimienfaq­he Assizecour­t however failed in his bid to secure the bronze in the 74 kg category male freestyle event after losing to Wales Curtis Dodge.

Also yesterday, Nigeria’s 100m hurdler Oluwatobil­oba Amusan advanced to the final with 12.73seconds while her compatriot, Grace Ayemoba finished in fifth position.

Amusan, who competed in lane two of Heat one, was the only athlete to clock a sub 12 in the heat.

Brianna Beahan of Australia came second with 13.02seconds, Jamaica’s Meagan Simmonds returned third with 13.17seconds.

Alicia Barrett of England came fourth with13.19 seconds while Cyprus’s Natalia Christofi came fifth with 13.66seconds.

In Heat 2, Jamaica’s Danielle Williams came first by clocking 12.69seconds, her compatriot Yanique Thompson returned with 12:95 seconds, thereby qualifying for the final.

Tiffany Porter of England came third with 12.99 seconds, Australia’s Michelle Jenneke came fourth with 12.99seconds and Nigeria’s

Ayemoba came fifth 13.59seconds.

The final is scheduled to take place today at the Carrara Stadium, with Amusan competing in lane seven.

The competitio­n is scheduled end tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Nigerian female boxer, Ayisat Oriyomi, who was rushed to hospital after she lost her quarterfin­al bout to Northern Ireland’s Carly McNaul at the Oxemford Studios boxing event of the ongoing Commonweal­th Games in Gold Coast, Australia, has rejoined the Games Village.

There was joy when it was announced that the boxer who fought in the women’s 51 kg has been discharged.

Ayisat ran into a barrage of punches that dazed her and she quickly told the coach that she was no longer seeing her opponent and became defenseles­s.
