- From Andrew Agbese & Ahmed Ali, Kaduna

Asecond class traditional ruler in Kaduna State, the Etum Numana, Gambo Makama and his pregnant wife have been killed in Arak village of the state.

The attackers were said to have stormed his house in the early hours of yesterday and met him and his wife and opened fire on both of them.

Makama had traveled from his palace in Gwantu, to his village, Arak, to celebrate the New Year with his second wife when the incident happened.

A source in Arak said the gunmen who covered their faces with masks entered the house and began shooting, killing him and his wife and wounding one of his sons who was close by.

The source said while the chief and his wife died almost immediately after they were hit, the son aged about 45, was rushed to a medical facility for treatment.

The gun men after the shooting set the house and his car parked in the premises ablaze before taking to their heels.

Chairman of Sanga Development Area where the village is situated, Prince Bala Audu, who spoke on the incident on phone, said it happened few minutes after midnight. “He was sighted with his second wife who is pregnant, and then suddenly gunmen who I was told covered their faces with masks invaded the house and opened fire on them, alongside his son who is about 45 years old.”

Security agencies have also confirmed that the Etum Numana was killed along with his wife at their residence in the early hours of 1st January 2018 by yet unknown killers.

The Kaduna State Government in a swift reaction condemned the attack saying the ‘double murder” is a calculated threat to peace, and a most unfortunate attempt to intrude into a new year a pattern of criminality that threatens the right of citizens to security, life and liberty.

Senior special assistant to the Kaduna governor on media and publicity, Mr. Samuel Aruwan, said the governor has directed the security agencies to investigate the incident and bring the assailants to justice.

“We urge the people of Numana Chiefdom to remain calm and to support the security agencies as they investigate this latest threat to the hard-won peace in the area. The security agencies have also taken necessary measures to assign more personnel to the area to keep the peace,” he said

Kaduna police spokesman, ASP Mukhtar Hussaini Aliyu, said the police are investigating the incident and have dispatched an intelligence unit to get to the root of the matter,

“We got a distress call about 4am that armed men stormed his house and shot him with his wife. Before our arrival to the house, the hoodlums set the place ablaze and fled. We were not able to arrest them but we are intensifying efforts to ensure that,” he stated.
