Female corper rescued from kidnappers in Nasarawa

- From Hassan Ibrahim, Lafia

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) yesterday confirmed that a Batch A Stream 1 female youth corps member, Blessing Nwapa, has been rescued from kidnappers in Nasarawa State.

The NYSC Coordinator in the state, Hajiya Zainab Isah, said the corps member who hails from Abia State, was kidnapped at about 1pm on Friday, October 6th in Udege Mbeki community of Kokona Local Government Area of the state in company of other corps members and was released on Sunday.

“They were robbed and after that, she was picked up and taken away. She was the only female among them that day,” she said.

She explained that immediately after the kidnap, the NYSC in collaboration with the state government, the Nigeria Police Force, other security agencies and the traditional ruler of the place, Osu Ojiri, Alhaji Halilu Bala-Usman, swung into action to effect the release of the youth corps member.

She however refuted claims that the corps member was raped by her kidnappers, adding that all necessary medical investigations carried out at the Federal Medical Centre in Keffi proved otherwise.

“Yes she was beaten but never raped because at the time she was kidnapped, she was bleeding heavily.

So when they saw that she was menstruating, they didn’t want her again and started beating her,” she said.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Idrisu Kennedy, confirmed the kidnap and rescue of the female corper and revealed that serious efforts are on to arrest the kidnappers and bring them to face justice.
