Why we lost to Black Stars – Ashadi
A member of the Super Eagles team to the just-concluded WAFU Cup of Nations in Ghana, Destiny Ashadi has said the Eagles lost the finals because they couldn’t match the hunger of the Black Stars.
Although they were 2-0 winners over Ghana in their last group match, the Super Eagles recorded a scandalous 1-4 defeat when they met their arch rivals in the finals last Sunday.
As reactions continue to trail the humiliating defeat in the hands of the Stars, Ashadi told Daily Trust yesterday that their opponents showed more hunger in the finals.
He said it was not possible to beat the Black Stars who put in everything to avoid a second defeat in the hands of the Super Eagles in front of their teeming fans.
The Katsina United playmaker, who started the group match against Ghana insisted that the Eagles were not intimidated by the home crowd as he reiterated that they only failed to match the hunger of the home side.
He maintained that the Eagles did not play under any pressure but it was not their day considering that they did not play too badly.
“We are pained by the fact that we did not win the trophy after doing very well in the matches leading up to the grand finale.
“It is hard to explain exactly what went wrong that day but let me say our opponents showed more hunger and determination. “They played with all their hearts because they did not want to suffer a second defeat in front of their fans. It would have been shameful, if we had beaten them in the finals,” he said.
