Egba Foundation, others raise fund for scholarshi­ps to immortaliz­e Sofenwa

The Egba Science Education Foundation, Abeokuta Club, Ogun State Cricket Foundation, Old Students Associatio­ns of Comprehens­ive High School, Ayetoro and Methodist Boys High School, Lagos gathered in Abeokuta, at the weekend to immortaliz­e the late former Chairman of the Teaching Service Commission and foremost educationi­st, Chief Lamidi Ayinla Sofenwa.

The two-in-one programme witnessed the raising of fund for the scholarshi­p scheme in remembranc­e of the late elder statesman and a book launch and scholarshi­p scheme.

The book, entitled “Lamidi Ayinla Sofenwa: Quintessen­tial Gentleman and Educationi­st: A Biography”, was written by Olasumbo Martins, Dele Sogbesan and Biodun Odetoyin.

At the well-attended ceremony held at the Nobel House School, Abeokuta, speakers, who included the Ogun State governor, Sen. Ibikunle Amosun as special guest and foremost industrial­ist, Chief Tunde Abudu as chief host, called for a national award for Sofenwa, who they said served the nation well in the area of education.

In his remarks, the governor described late Sofenwa as “a detrilabis­ed Nigerian, sportsman and a renowned educationi­st who had contribute­d in no small measure to developmen­t of education sector in Nigeria.”

His words: “Clearly Baba is a quintessen­tial devoted man, an educationi­st per excellence and a true detribalis­ed Nigerian. Imagine he went to Potiskum in Yobe State and worked to the extent that a hall was named after him.”

Chairman of the occasion, Dr. G. A. Soyoye, said that Sofenwa was a man with many parts, saying “he is a good man, worthy in character and learning and a colossus in education. He excels everywhere he works. He is a man who was respected, honoured both home and abroad.”
