Tanker explosion kills 1, destroys 14 cars

- From Isa Sa’idu, Zaria

A tanker conveying gas exploded on Saturday night at Danmagaji area of Zaria killing one person, inflicting severe burns on two others, and destroying valuable properties.

Daily Trust observed that the tanker fire razed the Danmagaji Police Division and 14 cars parked at the premises and nearby areas.

It was gathered that the truck had bumped into a big pothole on the ZariaKano highway and skidded off the road to hit a nearby electric pole. As a result, witnesses said, it burst into flames and the content, with accompanying raging fire, flowed into the police division.

A check at the hospital yesterday revealed that the patients that were evacuated were gradually returning to their beds. However, it was learnt that one of the patients lost his life because of what the hospital management described as fear and tension, as many residents had mistaken the explosion for a bomb.

Speaking with newsmen at the scene, the Kaduna State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Agyole Abeh, described the incident as an unfortunate accident caused by the “impatience and indiscipline of motorists.”

Mr. Abeh said his command would liaise with the police headquarters and state government to relocate the police division to a nearby building pending the repairs of the damaged station.
