COE’s heads may endorse new teacher training programme
Provosts of colleges of education meeting in Abuja today are expected to endorse a programme for continued professional development for lecturers in their schools.
It comes as a national committee of teachers gathers in Abuja to design ways to implement the Teacher Development Programme at federal and state levels.
The meeting according to a statement from ESSPIN signed by its coordinator, Mr. Bankole Ebisemiju, will also consider reports from curriculum experts in Continuing Professional Development (CPD) modules for teacher educators.
CPD, which is to get accreditation from the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE), seeks to “equip college lecturers with the knowledge and skills to model appropriate practice and provide the basis for career-long professional development,” said the statement.
The CPD was developed by NCCE and is being funded by the British Department for International Development to enable teachers in colleges of education update their skills and knowledge.
The statement added that the programme will also make the teachers transit from the use of traditional methods of teaching to activity based learner-centered methods.
CPD will certify teachers for in-service training for areas as childhood care, education for primary, secondary or special needs as well adult and non-formal education.
