Team Nigeria wrestlers last to arrive for Glasgow Games
The Nigerian wrestling contingent which includes 14 matsmen and seven officials will be among the last batch of participants to arrive Glasgow today for the 2014 Commonwealth Games which begins tomorrow.
By arriving today, the wrestlers who have been on a training tour of Romania for over one week preparing for the games have left it late in order to conclude their preparations.
Thousands of the world’s top athletes have already arrived in Glasgow ahead of the 20th edition of the Commonwealth Games.
Sportsmen and women from 71 Commonwealth nations and territories on arrival at the Glasgow Airport were transported to the Athletes Village in the city’s east end ahead of the opening ceremony tomorrow.
Officials say an outbreak of norovirus affecting 53 staff at the accommodation site is now under control and wouldn’t threaten commencement of the event.
A temporary toilet facility, identified as a possible source of the sickness and diarrhea bug, has been shut down.
Across Glasgow, traffic restrictions are now in place as special lanes for Games vehicles come into force.
More than 4,500 athletes will be competing in 17 sports from July 24 to August 3.
The Games officially kick off tomorrow with a ceremony at the home of Celtic FC. Rod Stewart, Susan Boyle and Amy Macdonald are billed to sing at the event, which will be broadcast to an expected one billion viewers.
