- By Abubakar Sadiq Isah

A commercial cyclist was at the weekend crushed to death by a motorist at Awawa village, on the Abuja-Lokoja highway.

A witness said the incident happened around 9a.m. when a speeding Sharon bus with registration number DKA 288 YY, coming from Lokoja axis, ran over the cyclist while crossing the road, killing him instantly.

He said five passengers in the bus were seriously injured when the driver veered off into a ditch as he tried to avoid the cyclist, adding that officials of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) arrived the scene and conveyed the injured to hospital.

“The remains of the motorcycle rider, who was later identified by some sympathizers, was taken away for burial,’’ he said.

When contacted, Abaji unit commander of the FRSC, Moses Audu, confirmed the accident, saying the corpse of the cyclist was handed over to his relations for burial, while the five injured people were taken to St. Peters Catholic Hospital in Abaji.

In a related development, a two-month-old baby died while three others sustained injuries in a motor accident which occurred last Wednesday evening at Manderegi village, on the Abuja-Lokoja highway.

A witness said the accident happened at around 5:25 p.m. when a MAN Diesel truck with registration number XC 385JJJ, also on speed, lost control when one of its tyres burst and it crashed into a Honda Civic car with registration number AZ 729 ABC, killing the child and leaving three persons inside the car with injuries.

“The three injured persons, including the mother of the child, were taken to hospital by a combined team of the police and FRSC men, who came to the scene,’’ he said.

The FRSC unit commander also confirmed the accident, which he attributed to tyre burst, saying the corpse of the twomonth- old child was taken to Kwali General Hospital morgue.
